I agree that it's a great feature, but I had to get a lock for it just to be 100% safe. With the economy being bad and all, Hummers were targeted to be "gas stations." I didn't want the same happening to my Raptor despite it's unique locking mechanism. It doesn't really lock, though. So, I bought the fuel cap from Randy's Parts Manager, Mike Nobles, for a good deal.

I kinda liked it. That is until earlier this month I was on the way to Jackson Hole and stopped at a Flying J. Never made it back in I15 when the check engine light went on and I almost had to change my jeans. The book says one of three issues - emissions, bad fuel or stuck fueler. Seeing as how I hadn't driven 1000 yards I figured it couldn't be bad gas - not that soon, plus the engine was purring just as it always doe. Looked further in the book and found the only way to turn off the light was 3-cold starts, 8 hrs apart. I figured I was doomed to see the idiot light for a couple days. We got back on the I15 and decided to stop at the next gas station just to see if it was the filler.

Stopped at a station and acting like a safe cracker I had my ear close to the filler as I put the nozzle to see if I could feel or hear anything different. Nope. Went ahead to put a gallon of high test in (that's all it'd take) and off on the road again. With the light still on. I went through the menu on the dash and found a systems reset (or something similar). Figuring I couldn't make it worse I clicked ok to reset everything back to factory specs. The light stay on.

We drove this way to ID Falls where we stopped to refuel (10 gals). All the way I'm driving seeing that damn light but not feeling anything different in the drive. Got back in the truck, turned it on and no light!

The moral of this little story is I don't think I like the capless gas fill. However I'm also not willing to spend any money on a locking cap. What I've caught myself doing since then is being careful when I'm done filling up. I've caught myself pulling out the nozzle and reinserting it a couple times just to make certain it closes.

Other than that - driving in fine sand, dirt, snow, and slush - I'v not seen any evidence that anything got in past the cover. I filled up after leaving Jackson WY and the entire side of the truck was covered with dirty slush. Hell I couldn't tell where the cover was it was that bad. I opened the cover and found it dry underneath.

The problem I had may have be one-off. The truck is from Southern Arizona and not used to cold nasty weather so maybe it was telling me something....

Cruse set at 70 no idiot light and 20.1 mpg

Come on now, almost everyone who wants to keep his job finds a way to demonstrate that he's indispensible. That goes double for people in elected positions, so legislators write more and more laws to justify their existence. Which means, of course, that they view their jobs completely differently from the people to elect them.

He does what? A golf ball in the filler neck. Are you talking about the filler neck that is stored under the rear seat? I sure hope so, if not, I'm totally lost.

I don't know how my post got on this thread, when I was posting this quote in the Cheap mod thread. Sorry about this post, but apparently I was holding my mouth wrong when I replied.
