I took my steps off yesterday and the paint is bubbled on both sides under the rear mount of the steps under the door. My rocker on the passenger side is gone on the bottom, might be able to patch a section since its not up the side yet. My driver side ill be able to save.
I went to pep boys and bought clear bra material. Cut them, cleaned the surface and applied. They held up all PA winter. A couple look worse for wear but itís a 5 minutes replacement.

Funny, my truck is EXACTLY the same, in exactly the same spots.

the running board mounts seem to be creating a rust issue for my truck

So has anyone actually linked the running boards to rust issues as well? Have guys without them noticed less or no rust issues?

Seeing the inside of my rusted rocker panels, is say the running boards are not the issue. They are rusting from the inside, out. The problem stems from not being able to get water out of the rocker panel. There are small gaps along the rocker panel to let the water out, however if you have done any offroading, these small gaps are likely filled with dirt, sand, leaves, sticks, rocks, etc. Which do not allow the water to escape once it enters.

The best solution is it clean it, coat / protect it then to continue the process at an interval that you can afford.

Good luck.
