Time to find a new dealer?

While doing the research for my future Raptor purchase, I came to the conclusion that the dealer I was going to place my order with may already be starting to play games.
They quoted $1,100 over invoice price for the Raptor, which isn't great, but better than MSRP. So far, so good.
I have a vehicle that will be traded in for the Raptor. It has 14,000 miles on it, and is in excellent shape. The dealership quoted almost $5,000 under what KBB shows as the value of the vehicle if it were traded in.
Do dealerships in general lowball the value of a trade in vehicle, to give them some bargaining leverage? Or is this the signs of the old bait and switch, where you get a decent deal on one end, and the shit end on the other?
Any and all comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

From a dealers perspective, the vehicle is never worth what "Book Value" shows. Reason being, you can't call up KBB or NADA or whomever, and say "Buy my car". Auctions, comparable sold pricing, and recon all make up what the trade is worth. With the being said, $5000 under KBB clean trade is probably a lowball by a decent amount, maybe 1000-2000 depending on what you are trading in. But YES, we do use trade in allowance as a way to make up some profit under SOME curcumstances.

dont' forget to figure in your sales tax savings into the mix from the old car (if you live where there is sales tax)
The way I like to do it is either:
1. Have the dealer consign the car and pay them a percentage, works with higher end vehicles
2. find my own buyer and do an "in and out" thru the dealer so you get the sales tax credit.

Anytime I trade in a vehicle I have always visited a minimum of 3 dealerships. Not all of the used cars adjusters are the same... My last purchase was a 2010 Fusion that I traded in a 2008 Mercury Mariner for and had 4 quotes... 12k, 14k, and 15k and 15600... The last quote(15.6) his first was under12k, I then showed him the 15k I had in writing he then said well why didnt you use that dealership? I told him if he didnt want to sell me a Fusion I will and started to leave... ha ha ha... He said give me a few minutes I will talk the manager(must have needed that last sale for the month) you know the good ole I must talk to the boss line... He came back and said ok he will go 15.6 if I sign now... I said cool and signed up for a new Fusion... I then told him I would be using Ford's A-plan for the sale... and had a new Fusion the next day...

Agree with Hockster, you have to do the leg work and shop around and don't be afraid to let one dealer know if you've already found a better deal. Today with listings on line , I found my used Scab for less and was given 5k more on a trade than any local dealer would offer but the truck was 600 miles away. Was skeptical of going this far but the truck only had about 8k miles on it and dealer agreed to meet me half way and to drop the deal if I didn't like the his vehicle for any reason. Happy to have found the Raptor and to be rid of my 06 Taco. Good luck.

Run your pricing as a private sale then knock off about 3 grand and you will be at least close to what they will offer you. They don't want your vehicle unless they can make a few bucks sending it out wholesale. It is rare that they find such a keeper that they are going to give you the real value. If you have the time and patience sell it yourself. I have always sold my own and done much better 2 to 3K than the dealer offered.

I had the same problem trading in my '11 Jeep Overland, dealer was upfront about it and I did a lot of research on value for the car. I checked Mannheim auction prices and talked to some friends in the auto business and unfortunately the Jeep lost a ton of value in the first year. Overall though I'm happy with my Raptor and glad to get rid of the Jeep.

also, give Randy a call, he does $3000 below sticker, which i think is a little less than the $1100 over invoice in your deal.... and see what he can do on trade in. i know for a fact buying from him is easy peasy, and a great guy to deal with. if the numbers he can do make sense to you, i say do it! but also like others said, see what kind of offers you can get for trade in and their prices too.

Thanks for the ideas guys.
I think that I will forget about using the Tacoma as a trade in, and just try selling it outright. I know that I will get more for it that way.
After that is done, I will be getting a hold of Randy.
Thanks again.
