My speedo was going out intermittently causing the transmission to shift irrationally and stay stuck in first gear.
After some research I decided to replace the speed sensor on the rear differential.
The only sensor I see on the rear diff has on bolt holding it and connects in the side of the diff.
I went to pull it out and felt resistance. It appears there are 2 wires that went into the sensor and the broke when I pulled it off.
So I removed the cover and see that the two wires go into side of the gears.
The sensor I was given from the parts store does not have any wires.
I will post some pictures if anyone can lead me to the correct part number and way to fix this. It appears at this point I will need to remove the gears from the differential.

I just went thru this. The dealership did the work. I believe the speed sensor is in the Trans. They dropped the transmission and replace a wire harness. I believe it had 3 separate pieces of which the speed sensor was one.

Not being very knowledgable on such things, but sounds like you tearing into the rear end locker.

Thanks for the response.. All the info I have found shows the speed sensor in the rear end. I disconnected it and started the truck and drove it up the driveway and the speedo did not work which lead me to believe that it was linked to the speedo. I could be wrong. At this point it looks like I need to pull the rear end gears out either way

What year is your truck? The 2010 I have on the hoist has 4 wheel speed sensors and the wires going into the diff are for the electric locker. It sounds like one of your wheel speed sensors is giving up the ghost. If you have access to some form of scanner that lets you monitor your ABS system, you should be able to pinpoint which one.
