I had an odd malfunction that just start occurring with the rear camera system. I am not sure if it is software or hardware related. It is intermittant, and didn't repeat itself when I took it in to the dealership to check (of course). They told me the camera was quite expensive to replace, but I am not convinced it is a camera problem. It could be, but I would think that if the camera in the tailgate was bad, it simply wouldn't show any picture at all, or a badly obscured one at best. This malfunction seems like it is software related. The problem is that 50% of the time, the rear view display is "flipped" and the guidelines vanish. What I mean by "flipped" is that the image is a mirror opposite of what it should be. Objects on the left, now appear on the right and vice versa. The view also has a "fisheye" look about it with distortion around the perimeter of the image. I have attached a file that shows the same backup view with and without the malfunction. Has anyone else seen this malfunction? What was the eventual resolution and what guidance would you suggest I give the mechanics when trying to diagnose the problem? I don't want this issue to get the shotgun approach and end up replacing a bunch of stuff that really didn't need to be.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The guidelines on my truck have occasionally disappeared, but the image doesn't mirror-image. Resetting the guidelines is a simple matter, of course.

I had that issue on my f150. They replaced the camera and it fixed everything.

Yes, to the tune of about $800.00! The camera was replaced in the end. Very disappointed.
