I hear ya, and that's why I stay away from undercoating like Crown and the other 'permanent' ones. They can trap moisture against the steel and cause hidden corrosion.
Oil based undercoats are pretty good as they won't stick if there's moisture there, and they do stay around for a long time.
My cheap alternative as a teenager was to use a Wagner power sprayer and used engine oil on my Bronco. Worked great, helped wash the mud off, but Dad didn't exactly like what it did to the driveway... But I ddin't have much rust on a 20 year old truck.
