I trimmed my OE one down ~6". Same reception, but less unnecessary wacks in the parking garages. I'm still a few inches above roof height so its a nice feeler for getting a lil too close for comfort.

I ran a stubby on my Gen1 and was basically just for looks, poor reception. When I did glass fenders, had no antenna, but got a marine antenna that was mounted under the dash. Worked well if your prefer the stubby look but want local reception.

I ordered a 13" factory one off Amazon. I dont listen to the radio so it doesnt really matter to me if I get good reception.

I'd recommend keeping it a few inches taller than the truck. I shortened the one on my Mustang- popped the ball off, cut it, ground it down so the ball would go back on and touched up the paint.

I got a 16" one from Autozone works good on the road and at my son in laws ranch. My factory one did the same thing when I tried pulling into the garage.
