I've seen them on a number of Land Rover Defenders, and immediately liked the idea. Properly mounted they will do their job. The risk of cable breaking is infinitesimal...indeed the force to break a 1/8th inch stainless cable would do all the more damage if unimpeded. The real risk lies in the mounts breaking loose.
I've been thinking of doing exactly the same on my Gen 1. Darned plastic fenders leave the need for fabricating a bracket using the bolts that mount the fenders to the sub-frame. Easier is the making of a bracket at the roofline and mounting it with nutserts....

Put a contractors ladder rack on. Posts on front and back bumpers etc etc. Should be enough wind noise you do not need deer whistles
