Best stock ref pic I have found is at Magnaflow.com choose 19350 as part number and look for the installation instructions. There are some pics of the stock exhaust within the instructions.

I wonder if the sound would improve if that small muffler/resonator were removed. With a turbo, there's not an issue if back pressure is decreased....correct? Thoughts?

The issue is that mufflers and resonators usually have a weep hole in them. If that part of the exhaust was removed (with it's weep hole), it would presumably start a shit-storm of unrelated problems.
