GEN 2 Tailgate Sticker

I am thinking of removing the large FORD appliqué on my tailgate. Is the metal under the sticker smooth? Or is there a recess in the metal where the oval Ford emblem would normally go?

There is a giant hole. You will need to swap tailgates with someone.
