I don't think it would make a difference. Sport mode doesn't give you anymore power then standard mode, it just changes the throttle mapping and shift points (at partial throttle). When going full throttle, the engine is giving you all she's got in either sport or normal mode.

Just off the line response from Sport mode might give a 10th of a second better result or so. It also appears the transmission shifts more quickly in Sport mode. Granted, the standard F-150 also has a Sport mode, which I have used...but it seems the Raptor can shift quicker.

TFL does interesting videos, but I trust Car & Driver to provide meaningfully accurate results when it comes to 0-60 times. They are able to test under very controlled conditions with much more sophisticated equipment, so it is easy to make a comparison. Here are two links from C&D Instrumented Tests:

2017 Ford F-150 Crew 4x4 King Ranch 3.5L EcoBoost and 10-speed auto:
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2017-ford-f-150-35l-ecoboost-10-speed-automatic-test-review

2017 Ford Raptor SuperCab 802A High Output EcoBoost:
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2017-ford-f-150-raptor-supercab-test-review

Here's the takeaway:

The CrewCab F-150 tested weighed 5,474lbs
The SuperCab Raptor tested weighed 5,696lbs

F-150 tested clocked a 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and the quarter in 14.4 @ 97mph with a top speed of 108mph and 70-0 braking in 175ft.

Raptor tested clocked a 0-60 in 5.0 seconds and the quarter in 13.7 @ 100mph with a top speed of 107mph and 70-0 braking in 206ft.

SO...the SuperCab Raptor is heavier than a fully-loaded Crew F-150, and at sea level it absolutely smokes it. I cannot imagine a Crew Cab Raptor *not* beating a Crew Cab loaded F-150 in scientific testing. You can see the effect of the tires when you look at the braking stat.

A Raptor tire weighs 65lbs; a Lariat 20" tire weighs 39lbs.

For those who think the H.O. engine is overrated and the standard EcoBoost is underrated...I'd advise you to read the workshop manual. You'll see there are many differences between the Raptor engine and the standard F-150 engine.

someone cares

lol yeah, I do, and I think most owners should. I, personally, am not going to drag race a truck, but I think manufacturers that take creative license with their performance numbers should be called out on it. If Ford exaggerated the difference between the HIGH OUTPUT!!! Raptor and the run-of-the-mill F-150 (especially if they turn around and sell us a tune!), well...

Still, I'd like to know more about the trucks they ran. Octane of the fuel, actual curb weights (and options), psi of the tires, blah blah blah. It's also irritating that they ran the test at such high elevation, because I think that will affect the Raptor a bit more, since the engine is probably a bit more high strung due to tuning. But maybe I'm just in denial because I drank the koolaid :roflbow:

I thought people were triggered when the Power Wagon won that Motor Trend shootout. This is even worse. "OMG a raeguwler effwun fibtee beet mai preshus raepturd. ets a kunspearisy! boorn teh wetch!"

It doesn’t shift any quicker at WOT. The sport mode benefits are virtually negated at WOT from a dig. Rolling start and partial throttle is another matter.

Also, the 2018 3.5EB got a power bump. The high output model in the Raptor didn’t. So your 2017 numbers don’t really apply.

If you don't care that your specialty truck loses comparisons, then why the heck are you on a forum of enthusiasts? (Not you specifically, Aaron)

Point is that Ford built and sold a specialty truck around "performance." If the truck doesn't perform as well as the standard product, we have a problem. In this case, we don't have a problem.

BUT MUH HIGH OUTPUT

I may have to take my Raptor to the drag strip once it's broken in and do some testing, for science.

Drag racing isn't everything. I come from a motocross background and realize you don't have to always ride the winner of the magazine shootouts to have a good bike.

Who gives a shit if your truck gets stomped by something else on the street? You're going to blow its doors off in the dirt because the suspension is the main feature of these trucks. Not the motor...that's a bonus. Also our "specialty" trucks will loose in comparison to 94 F150 with $10k in suspension under it in the dirt too. There's always something that can beat you out there. So worrying about losing comparisons is pointless. It doesn't make you more of an enthusiast to be mad because every shootout didn't prove your bias about your truck.

The Raptor is the best FACTORY platform for running in the dirt, not drag racing or road racing or anything else. You'll get dusted in drag races by base model 5.0s with a supercharger too. Enthusiasts know what their trucks can do, and modify them to do the things they want them to but can't. Enthusiasts don't get their ******* in a bunch about what some writer or youtube personality says.

I don't think you're seeing my point. The Raptor really has just three selling points that justify its price compared to a standard F-150 upon which it is based: engine, suspension, and looks.

If drag racing wasn't important, than Ford could have just as easily stuffed a standard EcoBoost under the hood. 375HP and 470lb-ft would be plenty to motivate the Raptor. They put the high-output engine under the hood to make this truck "fast." That's the only reason why they did it. So, if it loses in a comparison test to the standard product with a lower output engine, then everyone should care.

As for suspension, yeah...I read the article about the Raptor losing to the PowerWagon. MotorTrend complained the Raptor wasn't stable traveling at speed on rutted, washboard surfaces. The PowerWagon was...and it only has a standard suspension. The ZR2 was. M/T's argument was that the Raptor was designed to go fast on bumpy off-road surfaces...but it doesn't do it as well as some competitors. I actually believe them...the Raptor feels very squirmy and unstable in the rear at speed over bumps. So if your specialty off-road truck is slower than the standard issue, and less stable off-road at speed...then everyone should care.

Looks are indisputably good. The Raptor is the best looking truck on the road. I'd say the wide stance is what makes this truck.

When it comes to speed, I still believe the Raptor is the fastest pickup truck currently on the market. I don't care about modified old trucks are new trucks with aftermarket bolt on performance parts. What I care about is that the Raptor I bought is the fastest pickup of all factory trucks for the year, and the best off-road. That's why I bought it. Why else would you pay extra for a truck that generally tows and hauls less than a standard F-150?
