You might want to consider building-in pre-measured sections for things like gas cans, a cooler, a floor jack, etc.. Also if there's a way to make is easily removable so you can still use the bed when needed, otherwise it looks good so far!

any real downforce on the horizontal bar between the uprights will demolish the entire cage.

What is the purpose of the cage? Just to hold a single spare tire?
Sorry I don't know much about bed cages and was just curious what its real benefits are.
