For those of you helping, I greatly appreciate it.

I was looking for help and realize there are people here of all different levels of maturity. I would rather have these "dummies" who are not "turbo mechanics" trying to help and give me advice, than a "turbo mechanic" making insults.

Anyway, I took several videos already, and that one was the best I could come up with. Its hard to capture the sound. My choices are with the window down and getting all sorts of wind noise, or windows up like I had in this video.

I will try to make another video showing the Tachometer as well. I feel that an explanation of the issue will go further than a video, because the video can't show the hard thump. The issue is most prevalent when the engine is almost lugging. In the video as the boost rises, the engine RPM also rises of course. As the boost/rpms rise, the leaking air sound, which has a metal tinging sounds associated with it increases. Once its at apps 17psi it drops to 0 with a hard thump. The thump is so strong, it feels like I drove over a 4x4 post.

Thanks again

So are you able to replicate the sound if you want it to?

@flzrider Thank you very much for your words of wisdom. I am definitely not going to start tinkering with it myself, this is way above my head; besides thats what warranties are for right? When I go back to the dealership I will mention what you said.
@df4801 It is intermittent whether it is "acting up" or not. When it is "acting up" I am able to easily replicate the issue by letting the engine lag, or slowly accelerate.

I filmed a few more videos. I apologize, the videos only do so much justice.

I have no idea what that is, but it’s definitely not right! Sounds strange to be a boost leak. Can you make it do it by power braking it? If so then have someone power brake it while looking and listening from the side with the hood open to see if you can pinpoint it.

Mine has that sound, but maybe not as loud as yours, hard to tell from the video.

I have run diesels my whole life so the others can spare me the normal turbo spool sounds lol. Although perhaps normal for this engine??

At first I thought I was hearing a boost leak but later realized from the forum and YouTube that it was indeed the high frequency wastegate rattle.

It does go away abruptly with letting off the throttle any amount, or with any change in load like the transmission shift.

Perhaps not helpful but I think your initial noise does sound like the same fast rattle.??

Why not just wait until it’s acting up and then head over to the dealership to do a drive with a tech? Maybe stop by there once beforehand to show them the new videos and what your plan is. Cause crappy phone mic or not that’s not even close to normal.

I appreciate all of your input. My local dealership is booked out a few weeks chronically, but I got my service advisors personal phone number now, so Ill give him a heads up and drive by next time it acts up.

When I am able to do this, and they get the issue addressed, I ll come back and let you all know what the issue is. I hope its not a widespread problem that all of you have to deal with!

Thanks again

A person can pretty much tell when something is not normal with their 60k new truck I’m guessing. If I hear anything making loud noises the last thing I will ever say to myself is. Oh that’s probably just normal noise that just started coming from under the hood

I’m hearing the exact same sound. Usually only happens when I have been cruising on the freeway for 10+ miles and am at low rpm.

So I did some research and it seems like the 3.5 Ecoboost motor uses an eBOV (electronic blow off valve, although technically it really should be called an electronic re-circulation valve as it release the boost back into the intake system). The eBOV is attached directly to the intercooler. This video is from a 1st gen 3.5 ecoboost, but you can see it here: https://youtu.be/V-bdHOzVHUc?t=83

There is an intake manifold pressure sensor attached to the top of the top of the manifold that tells the ECU when to open the eBOV. Same video, can be seen here:

https://youtu.be/V-bdHOzVHUc?t=216

After some more searching, it seems like people have had issues with the eBOV staying open for longer than it should, usually due to a torn internal diaphragm. The issue is fixed by replacing the eBOV. See this thread: BOV staying open under load... 2013 FX4 SCREW - Page 3

You can try convincing your dealer you know what the issue is, but that generally doesn't go over too well. You can also try replacing the part yourself, but that is $ out of your pocket and you run the risk that it is actually something else all together.

Let us know how it goes.
