To add to the discussion, they only run 87 in all of the trucks at Raptor Assault....

Thats because they dont want you to be able to go too fast!

Ford engineers designed our trucks to run on premium fuel. But because they know people will put regular gas in it, they designed the ECU to adjust the combustion parameters to avoid detonation and damaging to the engine, something turbocharged engines are especially vulnerable to. In engineer speak that's called idiot proofing a design. So yes, your truck runs fine on 87 because the engineers knew you would do that and made allowances for it. But you will get better performance running premium and have a lower risk of detonation damaging your engine.

You should get better mileage with 87 but better performance with 91. If Ford did their job right then detonation/pinging shouldn't be a problem with either.

So don't feel like you're harming your engine with regular fuel. It's purely a question of performance vs consumption.

Of course, if Ford didn't do their job right...

So a buddy of mine got me this reply from a "master engineer" at Ford:

"Use 93 octane if possible and just drive it u can't hurt it unless ur real stupid make sure to work boost up some to break in turbos or they can stick"

Thanks for the replies and viewpoints, everyone. I'm definitely gonna quit babying it like my M3 was during the break-in period.

I run the cheapest fuel I can find around town at any crack selling fuel station :) because it's a 70k truck and I got a payment coming up :)

ok, for those who don't know how modern engines work. There are essentially microphones on your engine, that listen for knock. They advance the timing (and some cars control how much boost as well) until it detects slight (non damaging knock) once it's detected it pulls back timing. It will do this multiple cycles in a second. If you run 87 octane it will run just fine, if you run high octane it CAN run better under heavy use and during REALLY HOT DAYS and near sea level.

It's right in the owners manual that the truck can run on 87 but Premium is recommended. It's the baddest truck out there, I'm feeding mine premium.

Some people who have no idea what they are talking about will say they run regular and their engine has no knock to speak of. What they don't know is their is a phenomenon called Knock Retard where the computer will pull timing in order to avoid it, which occurs quite often in boosted engines and far more often in boosted engines with low octane fuel.
