What is the downside to simply cutting the top of my air pipe and placing a dry or oil cone filter just forward of the MAF? From what I gather it would cost less than $50.

I guess that depends upon whether...
- you think you can achieve with the seat of your pants what automotive engineers need a flow bench for,
- it rains in your area,
- you ever go off road,
- you ever encounter mud off road,
- you don't care if mechanics laugh when they open the hood of your truck.

You need to define your goal here. The stock intake is a CAI. So what are you trying to accomplish?

Stock is fully enclosed except for the opening behind the side fender and a CAI typically has an open box. Closed is best used when off-roading in dusty environments.
