OK gang, I decided to just make the thread about intakes on the Raptor. We are talking mostly about the 6.2L in this case.

Summary about intakes

I have read all the threads I found on this forum about "CAI" and here is what my conclusion is. If you buy any flavor of intake you need to get some flavor of tune. That is common sense as a intake alone just makes noise and kills low end if you have been modifying for a while.

I can also conclude that the only intake mod that has a consensus of HAPPY is panel filter and tune. Remember the stock intake is a CAI as well as seems to also be the best for OFF ROAD use for a few members.

What to post in this thread

My hope is in this thread owners out there with either aftermarket CAI or a Panel Filter with or with out tune will post their setup and their thoughts on them. This way we have 1 post that current and future owners can reference to get a better idea on what and if they want to buy anything.

Details to help everyone:

Engine Size: (5.4 / 6.2)
Intake type: (Panel, AFE, Airaid, Roush)
Tune: (Stock, 5-star, SVC, Other)
Off Road: YES or NO / Works great / Hate it cause gets to Dirty / Stock is best for off road DUH!..
You Experience:.. Makes lots of noise / Car goes Vroom Vroom.. You get the idea

Engine Size: (6.2)

Intake type: Volant with Donaldson power core filter and per filter sock.

Tune: 5-star and SVC ( I have ran both tunes with my volant )

Exhaust: MBRP cat back.

Off Road: YES

You Experience: I made the change to the Volant and loved the sound. I did make the leap for an exhaust and a tune to take full advantage of this intake. The install was a bit tricky since the instructions where not great. With some help from the forum and from Chris at freedom motorsports I finally addressed all of the install fittment issues. I do believe that Volant could have shipped the connector tubes a bit longer as I had a tube become disconnected shortly after install leaving me in a pickle on the beach. But nothing a bit of clamps and screwdriver did not take care of. The second issue I had with this setup was water ingestion. After HITH 1, I noticed small amounts of muddy water residue in the intake tube. I removed everything and gave it all a good cleaning. The only thing I think it could have been the seal around the filter not being right enough. Since then I have had another run in with water during one of the NC meet ups. This time my engine got very mad at me and the filter was soaked. I cleaned and dried the filter and then blocked the front hole where the ram tube is supposed to connect with a drain plug. I have also replaced the filter and the seal around the top of the box. I have seriously considered going back to the stock intake since I still have it. If I have any more water issues I will without question.

Another thing to note is that the Donaldson filter claims 100,000 miles. This is not true if you operate your vehicle offroad.

6.2 AFE stage 2(with lid). Formerly used Five Star tune now run SVC tune.

Off road quite a bit.

AFE makes it louder. Butt dyno says I get a decent power boost.

Reliability... yeah not so much. After almost exactly a year the boot on the intake tube broke this past weekend. On top of a mountain on a trail. Really unhappy about that failure. Made worse when I got word today that AFE is difficult for supplier to get in touch with and they may not sell parts. Looks like AFE will be coming off my truck soon.
