Anyone up for doing a group buy on some TSS billet oil pump gears ?

They have done all the R&D for them and will run off a single set at a time, but we can get a MUCH better price if we can place an order for 10 or more.

Stock cast oil pump gears in these overhead cam Ford engines are a known weak point. Especially if you are pushing the engine beyond stock or running a blower.

Any takers ? The more orders we can get together the cheaper the price. apx 6 week delivery

If chrisandalex1 (luxury prerunner raptor) or sprsnk has not done it yet then it is not needed.. Lol

They havent done it, because it is not easily available, yet. It is needed if you want a "bullet proof" set-up on a high hp engine.

Wonder how many 6.2 engine failures that have happened could be traced back to the oil pump gears shattering ........ :pokeowned:

Interesting, whats the pricing on these if they did get 10 sets?

He said $450-500 for a single set and that if he got an order for 10 or more it would be more like $300-350, the more ordered the cheaper the price.

What are the OEM gears made of? Pot metal?


only unknown is how the 6.2L cast crank will react with them. Must be used with an upgraded ATI balancer too. It's all about crank harmonics. Ford has been using this same style crank driven oil pump on many different over head cam engine types from 4cyl to V8's. Very common for them to break on modified engines.

start with the stock oil pump.

It is a crank driven oil pump and the drive mechanism is the pump itself. It is a very efficient design but at the cost of reliability in a high hp or revving environment. The Ford system uses a weaker metal in the oil pump vs the material of the crank itself. There is a sound reason behind this, harmonics control. Harmonics are high frequency oscillations in the engine, these high frequency oscillations are transfered directly to the oil pump drive mechanism. High frequency oscillations are created by the pistons/rods and the forces being created on them. These frequencies are then transferred to the crank. The oscillations on the crank then creates a small chattering or hammering effect on the stock oil pump drive.

Now why would Ford not use a cryo or billet metal gear? The answer is simple. Oscillations or harmonics in the crank cause this vibrating and oscillation on the oil pump drive. The softer metal of the oil pump can usually flex without damaging the crank or the oil pump itself since steel is a true elastic material. The problem with the soft metal is that at elevated RPM and power levels the oscillations can be so intense that the pump may actually break causing an internally damaged oil pump with broken gearing which can potentially damage the engine.

Must be a design consideration, oil pump failing verses crank breaking lesser of two evils.. Kind of like the bumpstop/frame/crumple zone compromise.

Its also about cost vs. stock power needs.

If you just have a tune and CAI, then you dont need this.

If you have a blower, stroker engine, cam swap or other similar engine mods than this becomes a weak link.

Saving $100 on 1 million engines adds up for Ford, so they dont waste the money on it.
