Quite obvious that finishing is like winning. They did great and this is only their first run. I will be looking forward to seeing the improvement on the next race

Here is an update from speaking with Keith (Wiz) this morning for 15 minutes from Cabo...

They finished 4th Place in hinged Door class. and it looks to me like 19th overall in Evolution Class.

Grant Reuter and Keith Podolan (Race Raptor #95) in NORRA 2013

DAY 1 – Grant and Keith had a great first part of the day and ran out front and really enjoyed the truck. Then they had overheating issues on the dry lakebed. All the warning lights were coming on saying the engine was overheating so they back down the throttle until they went out and kept pressing forward. Next thing they know they are very low on fuel and they both thought something must be wrong. They knew they could go a lot further on fuel and backed the throttle down just in case the gauge wasn’t lying and sure enough they ran out of fuel. The truck was barely getting 4 mpg. They finally got some fuel and Keith noticed as fast as they were putting the fuel in the truck it was pouring out on the ground, so Keith immediately thought is was a broken fuel tank, so he pulled the tank to find nothing was cracked and there were no broken or loose hoses. They reinstalled the tank and the same issue. The fuel cans filler tube didn’t insert far enough down the filler neck to bypass the vent and every bit of fuel was bypassing out the vent hose on the ground. Keith figured a way around that problem and they made it to the finish at Bay of LA. Once they arrived Keith, Grant and Wes did a one over on the truck and everything looked okay. (Oh Yeah) Keith said somewhere in Day 1 or maybe it was Day 2 the chase truck got a flat and that also set them back an hour or more.

DAY 2 - They woke up the next morning and fueled the truck and at the gas station the starter craped out. They pushed it to the side and Keith ran tests on the truck and they had all the electrical they needed at the starter and the solenoid so the search was on to find a starter. Grant had his office in Seattle searching everywhere in Mexico and one of his people located a starter at a local dealer in Washington. So they looked into next day air service and couldn’t find a way to get it to Mexico. So they decided to put the truck on the trailer and start heading south to catch up with the race and this is when they got the truck on the trailer only to find the tires buried into the fenders and the spring was broken. There is one shop in Bay of LA called Samys and he already had a number of racecars and support vehicles he was repairing but he did have a brand new spring – the exact one they needed. Six hours later the truck was back on the trailer and now they were way behind the race and still had a race truck with a bad starter. They spent the day on the highway with Grant on the phone still in search of a starter on their way to Loreto.

DAY 3 – Woke up early in Loreto to start searching for a starter in the morning and still had no luck. They now had the same problem, the race had started and they could start Day 3 either so they got smart and headed to La Paz early. Once they arrived in LaPaz Wes the chase truck driver from Canada was talking to other race teams in LaPaz and they one guy said to take the starter off and clean it and rotate the coil plate. Keith said WTF, can’t hurt and that is when he found the post closest to the headers was loose and all the solder was melted off. He got out his torch and dripped solder on the post and installed it and sure enough it was perfect. They all did a prep on the truck and everybody was excited to enter the race again on Day 4 for the last leg.

Day 4 – The race is on… Started the leg from La Paz to the finish in Cabo and got 100 miles or so into the race and ran across two trucks stuck on a small goat trail in front of them. They waited and waited and finally they were both moving and Keith was buckling up his seat belts while Grant got underway and sure enough they got their truck high centered but they were in a spot where other racers could squeeze by except when Nick Baldwin could fit – Nick offered to pull them off the course and in the process Nick got them unstuck. A few miles later they noticed they were low on fuel again. While running on the race course they stopped and asked a few Mexicans they saw on the trail for fuel and even stopped at a few ranchers’ homes and nothing. Well, they ran out of fuel and sure enough they don’t have any cell phone service. Grant was trying to reach Wes and here comes a Mexican kid wanting money for gas. They also reached out to Wes and he was coming backwards on the course (After getting approval from NORRA Officials) they started their slow trek backwards on the course with fuel. While waiting for fuel Keith said he got a lot of pictures of Donkeys and Chickens – LOL. They bought 4 gallons of fuel from this kid and got back underway when sure enough they ran out again. Finally they got the fuel from Wes and got back hauling ass to hit a big ditch and lawn dart the truck and got sideways in the air and the only way Grant could save a big wreck was Grant took out bushes and a tree. Bent the front bumper, pealed the middle skid plate completely off the truck and damaged a front fender. Okay, his pride was hurt and they brushed that one off only to do it again a little further down the course. They both looked at each other and decided to back way off and they made the decision to finish the race. When they got to the next stop is when they noticed the back of the Raptor looked different. They put two plus two together and figured when they did their lawn dart they tossed Connors Pelican case out of the truck and destroyed the tool box that was strapped down next to it. Of coarse they didn't notice it was gone until much later down the road, so lets count that as a contribution to the local ranchers. Keith said all that was remaining in the bed of the truck was the 2 spares and the jack and they are still trying to remember what else was lost. They also lost all their electrical to the center console, the main GPS and their intercom. Keith said they spent most of Day 4 yelling at each other – LOL

Remember, there are Keith’s words NOT Grant’s and they are accurate to the best of my memory – I hung up the phone with Keith and started typing this – There is a lot more he said and some of it was ‘Censored” Ha Ha
