backpressure=quiet, that's why oem's make mufflers that have back pressure, it's cheap and easy to make a truck quiet that way.

installing headers removes back pressure, especially if you run without cats.

My experience is that a mellow exhaust system on a stock truck, becomes obnoxious and loud when you install headers and remove cats. That's why I normally recommend using some type of resonator in place of the cats, if you're not building the catback specific to the headers/mid pipes which you intend to run.
