5.4 magnaflow exhaust drone problem

As the title suggests, I recently changed out my stock muffler with a magnaflow 12288 - 18in:*3in, 2.5in x2 out; 5x8*oval, it sounded mean off the line, but the in cabin drone was unbearable. So I took it back to the shop and had them swap it out for 12588 - 22in : 3in, 2.5in x2 out; 5x11 oval. This muffler is much quiter, which I expected, but unfortunately it still has a bad drone at my cruising speed of 75 mph. I am not sure if it's magnaflows tone that is causing the resonance in the cabin or the added pipe that was added in before and links the stock dual pipes out the side?

My real problem lies with years and years of driving a jeep topless with wind noise and loud stereo has led to my left ear ringing that picks up on that drone and actually makes the ringing so loud in my head it hurts with prolonged exposure. All whining aside I'm trying to see if I should switch muffler companies/types...remove my stock pipes and just have the muffler exhaust exit after with some short turn downs or replace the whole thing and go with a bolt on cat back set up? What are my best options? I want the loud grumble and distinct get on the gas roar without any drone.

Is anyone running a dynomax VT? Any help from fellow 5.4s or others who have better options is appreciated.

Well...I can't speak to the drone in your 5.4...but I run a Magnaflow catback..6.2 which looks about the same setup as yours...I love mine with no drone...

Did you do any additional mods during the install...resanator delete...headers?..SCREW or SCAB...did you install yourself?...if not what did your installer say about the cab drone?...these are fairly common exhausts....

He's got a scab with no resonator. That's the way 2010's came.

Could that be part of the issue with the drone? Cat delete?

I put on the SW headers and got some drone but wasn't too severe.
Now I had a Xlerator 2in/2out muffler installed with internal X pipe inside and the drone it MASSIVE.
I've been spending a lot of time lately on trying to figure out a way to cancel it
and I might be doing a branch pipe on it just have to figure out the length I need and the correct location.
I think personally the 5.4's are more prone to drone for some reason but that's just me guessing.
My truck produces a strange pulsing sound and now with the new muffler I can really hear it.

i have a Flowmaster 50 series delta flow and the drone is bad at 75 but not that bad. i agree sometimes it hits an unbearable note but i just got used to it and now it's normal for me

Did not remove the cat, the stock 2010 5.4 setup doesn't have a resonator though (think that is what you meant to reference). Thanks though.

I'm guessing most other things being equal, I could try to dump the exhaust right behind the axle and see if the drone moves up the rpm range (to something away from cruising speed) into a comfortable spot.

Might even try a chambered type muffler, thought the VT would be a good solution, but I have read too many dissapointing posts on the clank that the valve makes when it opens/closes.

Thanks for chiming in Maxx...I had considered the whole magnaflow cat back system that you all sell (even called not that long ago to your shop) but I thought I would try the muffler first as a cheaper alternative for now and if I liked it would swap out the rest. My question is, for those installs you all do for the cat back system, do you get guys who just deal with the drone (like i used to on my 07 Screw)? Or does the system "tune" itself out of the drone being that the tubes were bent and applied for its application? Just curious.

I've read that dumping the exhaust under the truck also leads to drone because the sound waves bounce under the vehicle.

I love my exhaust set up the only time I have the drone is at 55 so I drive 58 or 50 if I have to drive that slow. every one notices my exhaust than they realise it's a raptor. I am getting the cat delete pip so hope it changes the 55 drone. it's like an orgen the biger the pip the deeper the tone the smaller the highter pitch so find the note your ear likes and go with it try getting it out the back you don't hear it as much but the person behind you will.
