I just found out about this and thought I'd see if anyone knows about it or currently uses it. It will take some more investigation so I understand what it can and can't do but it sounds very interesting (and revealing since it can involve sharing your trips with others - like on FaceBook).

From their website and PR:

EveryTrail enables people to keep track of their trips, by uploading GPS files or geo-tracking their trails, and allows to them to accompany those with stories and geo-tagged photos. The web service is quite feature rich already, but it’s the mobile apps that make EveryTrail unique and very fun to use.

Available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Windows Mobile, the apps allow people to geo-tag their trails and the pictures they take along the way instantly and automatically. The new iPhone app that’s being announced today makes the process super easy: all you need to do is let the device determine your location and hit the ’start’ button. The app will follow your path, and every photo you upload along the trail will automatically be geo-tagged and uploaded.

That way, the EveryTrail community you see what you’ve been up to. You can also share your trips with others on Twitter and/or Facebook, with just one click. So far, over 200,000 trips have been shared by EveryTrail users (217,588 worldwide to be exact, according to the website at the time of this writing).

I found it when I saw a link to a search for a missing 16-year old in Anza-Borrego (this particular search was last weekend). More on that later.

Check this webpage out! This looks very interesting!

Please note: The above link is an EveryTrail route showing (I believe) the search area for Mickey Guidry. This is where we ride in A-B and Ocotillo Wells!

Here's link to info about Mickey Guidry, the missing 16-year old from the San Diego area:

What a cool app!

I use Google Tracks on my Android phone, and it is great, but this has a lot more features.

Cool find Dan. I have a bike (cycling) program that emails you your route on a map. I like the readily available map of EveryTrail.

I really dig this idea, in theory. But on an iPhone? I just dunno...

Given the iPhone's non-multitasking nature, how realistic is it to think your trip will be recorded step by step? Does the app stay working when the phone goes to sleep? I presume it keeps tracking regardless of cell signal strength, then later uploads when connected again?

I've been eyeballing a SPOT: http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=111

Not cheap. By any means. But it does what this app seems to do, and it has the one clear benefit... being able to send a call for help, in an emergency.

Good questions Jason. That's one reason I posted it here.

In regard to calling for help, that's a good issue to discuss. In regard to offroading only: If it's able to call for help when you don't have a cell signal that's a good benefit. If it's cell signal dependent then I'm not sure there's a benefit. It's not a good idea to go offroading alone in one vehicle. The buddy system is an absolute necessity offroading.
