Definitely a smaller number of people with trucks, but I've seen everything from Toyota's, to ripped apart vw beatles on the sand. But with the advent of utvs dune buggies aren't as common anymore. Lots of water out there this year. As for the worthiness of a road trip, it's worth it to go after dunefest, there are so many people on the dunes, campers, etc. People reserve camp spots a month ahead of time. Id say if it were me I'd do it after dune fest have the dunes almost to yourself. If you ever end up here shoot out a pm.
