I personally would wrap one before painting. But eventually mine will need a paint job because it has desert pinstriping pretty bad.

Only a handful of colors offered per model year, and some colors were only available for a year or two. Even black changed over the model years. I believe the white and silver were the only colors that were offered all years and not altered. Plus many people are hard off-roading their Raptors, so a repaint will be common for some.

Quite a few here including myself ordered their raptor so I was able to choose what color I wanted instead of looking for one. I think most wrap their raptor instead of repainting it a completely different color.

Over on SVTPerformance.com a member had his brand new Shelby re-painted. He removed the vinyl stripes from the car and had them painted on as well. The after shots look outstanding to say the least. There is absolutely no comparison between OEM paint application vs a professional/high quality re-spray.

I don't know everyone else's opinion but the paint quality on these $60,000+ vehicles from Ford leave a lot to be desired. If you're someone who prefers the show over the go, I would think paint quality, clarity and depth would be high on your list of things to address on your specialty vehicle. Just as tires, suspension and racks would be high on someone else's list for a pre-runner.

In the end, it all depends on what you want out of the ownership experience. Many buy Raptors to off road, others do not. Many see the current performance levels of the truck as a launching board to greater things, others think it's a trophy truck off the assembly line compared to what they are ever going to use the trucks for.

In the world of spending $5,000 on wheels/tires, $5,000 on winches/bumpers/cages, and $10,000 on additional suspension goodies; I don't think $5-10,000 on a high quality re-spray is too far of a stretch for some people.

Why paint a new raptor instead of buying it that way?

Easy... Ford paint jobs suck, and they don't offer many unique options. Not that it's all their fault, it's an assembly line and they gotta make a profit. So if you want a color that different than every other f-150 that won't oxidize after 6 years, go to the pros and get it done right.

Why wrap vs paint a raptor?

price... It's way cheaper...usually. Also if you have ever been off roading or raced anything you understand the fact that rubbing and scratches are inevitable. If I off road without a wrap and scratch my door, it sucks. I can only fix it by repainting and buffing it out and trying to color match the rest of the panel. Now if my truck is wrapped, I peel the remaining wrap on that panel off and reapply. It's very easy and the truck is looking new again.

I would never paint a car a different color, much less a Raptor. I'd buy it the color I want or live with the color I get if the deal is right. I have preferences, like black, red, silver, yellow, white (in that order). I bought a C6 Vette "Patriot Red" sight unseen without doing my homework. It was burgundy. Silly me for ass-u-ming. I traded it less than a year later. My next Vette was "true" red, I loved it.

With the Raptor, it was an impulse buy, and it was the only one on the used car lot. It is black. It was love at first sight. But had it been red or white I would never consider painting it. Had it been terrain or blue I wouldn't have bought it. My favorite Raptor color now is Molten Orange. I'll live with the black rather than visiting an aftermarket paint job on a $50000 truck. And I think the paint job on my Raptor is excellent.
